Discover the Lighthouse of the Whales in Saint Clément, visit to do on the island of Ré
The Baleines lighthouse is located at the western tip of the island of Ré (Charente-Maritime), in the town of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines. The lighthouse owes its name to the fact that a relatively large number of whales used to beach themselves here on the Ile de Ré in the past. It succeeds the old Baleines lighthouse built by Vauban.
Built in 1854, this lighthouse has become the historical emblem of the Ile de Ré. You can discover all its secrets by visiting the lighthouse museum located at the foot of the old whale tower.
Discover breathtaking views between land and sea from its panoramic viewpoint
You will have to climb its 257 steps to have the chance to contemplate the magnificent panorama of the Atlantic Ocean. Between land and sea, you will discover the contours of the Ile de Ré and the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye can see. During the high season, you can even watch the sunset here.
At the foot of the lighthouse you will find a small village bordered by a pretty beach. The ideal place to spend a beautiful moment with the family between land and sea.
To get there, choose a gentle means of transport: cycling or RespiRé bus shuttles. By bike, you will discover the magnificent salt marshes before going there, in total connection with nature. If you are tired for the return, don't worry, you can take a shuttle taking the bikes for a calmer return.
