What are the culinary specialties of the Ile de Ré?
On the Ile de Ré, traditional cuisine is made from local, fresh and seasonal products. Due to its location both close to the mainland and bordered by the ocean, dishes based on shellfish are the most common on the island: oysters, clams, mussels… Here, they are particularly delicious!
Other seafood products, such as crab, prawns, squid and other seafood are offered à la carte in the restaurants in rhétais. During your stay, be sure to taste salicornia, nicknamed “green gold”. This plant is harvested from the salt marshes of the island.
Your seafood dish can be enjoyed with a good glass of Charentais wine or Pineau. Another speciality, the island's Cognac comes from limestone soils.
